Performing Umrah is a goal for many Muslims living in the UAE. The journey to Makkah and Madinah is something people save for and plan months in advance.

Over the past few years, getting a visa has become much simpler. The Saudi and UAE governments have moved nearly everything online.

You no longer need to visit embassies or spend hours at typing centres waiting for someone to fill out forms for you.

This guide covers everything you need to know. Who can apply? How to apply. What it costs. Health rules. How to check your visa status.

Read through it once, and you will have all the information you need to apply without confusion or last-minute stress.

What Is an Umrah Visa?

An Umrah visa is an entry permit issued by Saudi Arabia. It allows Muslims to enter the country specifically for Umrah. Unlike Hajj, which happens on fixed dates each year.

Umrah can be done at any time. Some go in winter when the weather is pleasant. Some go in Ramadan because the reward is greater. Some go during school breaks with their children. The choice is yours.

This visa is different from a tourist visa or a work visa. It serves one purpose. You enter Saudi Arabia.

You perform Umrah. You may visit Madinah to pray at the Prophet’s Mosque. You leave before the visa expires. Saudi authorities track compliance with these rules carefully. They know who came, when they came, and when they left.

The visa is now fully electronic. In the old days, you would get a physical sticker in your passport. That is gone now. When your application is approved, the visa is digitally linked to your passport number.

At the Saudi border, the officer scans your passport, and your approved visa appears on their screen. No stamps. No paperwork. No lost documents.

Some people worry because they cannot see anything in their passports. Do not worry. It is in the system. That is all that matters.

Who Can Apply from the UAE

Not every person living in the UAE can get an Umrah visa. You need to meet specific requirements.

Valid UAE Residency

Your UAE residence visa must be valid. It should have at least three to six months of validity remaining. If your visa is about to expire soon, the system rejects the application. Saudi wants to make sure you have a home to return to.

If your residence visa is brand new, that can also cause delays. The system likes stability. Not too new. Not too old. Right in the middle works best.

Passport Validity

Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you enter Saudi Arabia. This is a hard rule.

Example: If you plan to enter Saudi Arabia on June 1st, 2026, your passport must be valid until at least December 1st, 2026. If it expires in October, that is less than six months. Your visa will be rejected.

This is the most common reason for rejection. Check your passport today. If it has less than six months’ validity, renew your passport before starting the Umrah visa process.

Muslim Faith

Umrah visas are issued only to Muslims. Any Muslim aged 18 or older can apply on their own.

Minors and Children

Every traveller needs their own visa. Babies need visas. Toddlers need visas. Teenagers need visas. An adult guardian must apply for minors and travel with them.

Health Requirements

Saudi Arabia updates its health rules from time to time. In early 2026, they removed the meningitis vaccine requirement. Other vaccines are still recommended. More details in the health section.

Approved Application Channels

Only two ways to apply work. The Nusuk platform, which is the official Saudi government website and app. Or authorised travel agents licensed by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

Any other method is fake. If someone on social media offers a visa through their cousin, stay away.

Nationalities That Qualify

Common eligible nationalities include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, most European countries, and all GCC countries. Many others qualify, too.

What Affects Approval

Your passport nationality, how long your passport remains valid, whether your UAE residence visa is valid with enough time left, whether your documents are clear and correct, and whether you meet health requirements.

What Does Not Affect Approval

Your job title, how much money you make, your employer, whether you own property, your education level, or how many times you have travelled before. None of this matters.

Two Ways to Apply

You have two options. Both work. Both are accepted.

Option 1: Nusuk Platform

Nusuk is the official Saudi government platform for Umrah. Anyone with internet can apply directly. No middleman. No extra fees.

Website: umrah.nusuk.sa
App: Search for the Nusuk app on Google Play or Apple App Store

Use Nusuk if you want to handle the application yourself, are comfortable with online forms, have a credit card, want to choose your own hotel, and want to save money.

The platform offers e-visas, hotel bookings, transportation, train tickets, and packages. Everything in one place.

Option 2: Authorised Travel Agents

Many people prefer using a travel agent. This is fine if the agent is licensed.

Use an agent if you are traveling with elderly parents or young children, want a guided group experience; prefer someone else handling paperwork; want to pay cash, or are booking last-minute.

How to find a licensed agent: Ask for their license number. A legitimate agent gives it without hesitation. Ask friends who have gone recently. Read online reviews. Visit their physical office.

Warning about unauthorized agents: Every year, people lose money to fake agents. They post on social media with cheap offers, take money, and disappear.

If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. If someone only contacts you through WhatsApp with no office, walk away.

How to Apply to Nusuk Step-by-Step

Keep these things ready: your passport, Emirates ID, UAE residence visa page, recent passport photo, credit card, and a quiet place to focus for 30 minutes.

Step 1: Create an Account

Go to umrah.nusuk.sa or open the app. Click Sign Up. Enter your email, mobile number, and a password you will remember. A verification code will be sent. Enter it to activate your account.

Save your login details. You will need them to check your visa status later.

Step 2: Select a Package

Click “Umrah Service” or “Book Umrah Package.” Enter your preferred dates. You will see a list of packages.

The visa is bundled with a package from approved providers. You cannot get just a visa alone on Nusuk.

What to look for in packages:

  • Budget: Basic costs less. Luxury costs more. Know what you can afford.
  • Hotel location: Closer to Haram costs more but saves time and energy. Read if it says walking distance or shuttle service.
  • Transport: Private cars or group buses. A private room costs more.
  • Duration: 7, 10, or 14 days. Choose based on your time.
  • Meals: Some include meals. Some do not.

If traveling with family, add them now. Keep everyone in one booking.

“Muhammed”ote: Book at least two to three months in advance if going during Ramadan. Packages sell out quickly.

Step 3: Fill the Application Form

Enter your full name exactly as on your passport. Your passport number. Passport expiry. Date of birth. Nationality. UAE residence visa details. Planned travel dates.

Most important rule: Enter everything exactly as it appears on your passport. If your passport says Muhammad with two m’s, do not type Mohammed with an o. The system checks against passport databases.

Check everything twice. A friend had his visa delayed two weeks because he typed “Muhammed” instead of “Muhammad.” Small mistake. Big delay.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents

Document checklist:

  • Passport copy: Clear photo page, valid 6+ months
  • UAE residence visa copy: From passport or digital copy, 3-6 months validity
  • Emirates ID copy: Front and back, valid
  • Passport photo: White background, recent, facing forward
  • Vaccination certificate: Only if required at time of application
  • Confirmed return ticket: Book a refundable one if possible
  • Travel insurance: Often included in visa fee

Photo tips: White background, no shadows, looking straight, no smile, no glasses glare. Recent photo, not from years ago.

File size: Keep each file under 2MB. Use free online compressor if needed.

Step 5: Pay the Fees

Review all information one last time. After payment, changes are difficult. Read refund and cancellation policies. Agree to terms. Enter card details.

Cost breakdown:

Cost ComponentPrice (AED)
Tourist Visa for Umrah300 – 400
Dedicated Umrah Visa250 – 350
Health insurance50 – 100
Total visa cost300 – 500+

Complete packages with flights and hotels range from 850 to 4,390 AED depending on season, hotel category, and distance from Haram.

After payment, you get a confirmation email with your application reference number. Save this email.

Step 6: Wait for Approval

Your application goes to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for approval.

Standard processing: 5 to 10 working days. Fast-track: 2 to 3 days if documents are correct. Processing varies by nationality and how busy the system is.

Apply three to four weeks before travel. This gives buffer time for delays.

Status updates in your account:

  • Processing: With MOFA
  • Approved: MOFA cleared it
  • Issued: Visa ready; you can travel

If status stays on processing for over two weeks, contact support through the platform.

How to Check Your Visa Status

Method 1: Nusuk Account Website and App

Nusuk App

  • Log in with your registered email and password. If you are new, you will need to register first as a visitor.
  • Scroll to my permit option; sometimes this section appears as my booking section. Tap it.
  • Check your visa status.

Nusuk website

  • Visit the website
  • Log in with your registered email and password. You will receive an OTP to enter.
  • Go to my profile in the menu and view application status.

Method 2: MOFA Visa Inquiry Platform

Go to the visa inquiry service of the MOFA.

Select English. Under Device Type, select Barcode Reader.

Enter passport number; first name exactly as on passport; nationality; and captcha.

Click Inquire.

If issued, your visa document appears with a number, validity dates, and a barcode.

Method 3: Enjazit Portal

Visit the Enjazit Visa Services website. Select Visa Application Status. It will redirect you to the MOFA visa check services.

Method 4: Absher Platform

If you have an Absher account from past travel, log in and check visa services.

Common errors: Incorrect passport numbers, wrong name formats, and outdated reference numbers. Use the same details you used in the application.

What MOFA Approval Means

MOFA is the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They grant final visa approval.

In the past, people visited embassies and got passport stickers. Now everything is digital. When MOFA approves, the visa is linked to your passport number in their computer system.

At the airport, the officer scans your passport. Your approved visa appears on their screen. No stamps. No papers.

Keep a copy on your phone just in case. If you change your passport after visa is issued, the visa is gone. You must apply again.

Health Requirements for 2026

Recent Change: Meningitis Vaccine No Longer Mandatory

As of February 6, 2026, Umrah travelers no longer need the meningitis vaccine. The rule changed. All airlines know this.

Currently Recommended Vaccinations

Pneumococcal vaccine: Recommended for people aged 65 and above and those with chronic illnesses like heart, lung, liver, kidney disease, or diabetes.

Influenza vaccine: Highly recommended for everyone. Flu spreads easily in crowded places. Getting the shot takes five minutes and saves you from being sick during your trip.

Take vaccines at least 15 days before travel.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Rules change frequently. Check updates one week before travel. Do not assume last month’s rules still apply.

Travel Insurance

Basic insurance is included in visa fee. If you have pre-existing conditions, check what is covered. Consider additional coverage if needed. Hospital stays cost thousands without proper insurance.

Umrah Visa Rules and Penalties

Validity Period

Tourist visa used for Umrah: 90 days from entry, valid one year from issue for multiple entries. Dedicated Umrah visa: Usually 30 days.

Stay Duration

Leave before your visa expires. Not on expiry date. Before it.

Overstay Penalties

Fine up to 50,000 Saudi riyals (about 49,000 AED). Prison for up to six months. Deportation. Possible entry ban.

A friend knew someone who overstayed three days. He thought it would not matter. He paid thousands in fines and was banned for two years.

Do not overstay. Even one day.

Permitted Activities

You can perform Umrah, pray in Makkah and Madinah, and visit Jeddah. You cannot perform Hajj on this visa, cannot work, and cannot travel to Riyadh without checking visa terms.

Entry to Mecca Restrictions

Since April 2025, residents and citizens need permits to enter Mecca. Tourists and Umrah pilgrims with valid visas are exempt. Carry your passport in Mecca.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Short Passport Validity

Number one reason for rejection. Check your passport. If it expires within six months, renew first.

Last-Minute Applications

Processing takes time. Apply three to four weeks early. If you apply two weeks before travel and something goes wrong, you miss your trip.

Incorrect Personal Details

Misspelt names. Wrong passport numbers. Wrong dates. All cause rejection. Check everything twice. Have someone else read it.

Unauthorised Agents

Fake agents take your money and disappear. Use only licensed agents with physical offices and license numbers.

Ignoring Visa Validity Dates

Mark your exit date on the calendar. Set phone reminder. Leave a day early to be safe.

Not Reading Package Details

The cheapest package may mean a hotel far from Haram with no shuttle. Read what you are buying.

Assuming Old Rules Apply

Health rules change. Visa rules change. Check official sources before travel.

For applicants from certain countries, be aware of current visa restrictions for certain nationalities that may affect travel plans, though Umrah visas are processed separately.
