Is Your UAE Visa Active? Track Applications, Renewals & Cancellations
You know that feeling when you’ve done everything right, submitted all the paperwork, and now you’re just waiting? with the little voice in your head whispering:
“What if there’s a ban I don’t know about?”
Everyone who’s ever dealt with UAE visas knows this feeling.
Here’s the thing: the UAE has built systems that actually work. In 2025 alone, over 27.6 million visitors came through. Millions of applications. Millions of renewals. Millions of cancellations. Before you start worrying, check your UAE visa status.
In this guide, we will tell you how to check visa applications pending, renewal, cancellation, or ban status step-by-step.
Let’s dig in.
Checking Processing and Pending Visa Status
This is the one that drives people crazy. You’ve applied. You’ve paid. You’ve done everything they asked. And now, silence.
How long should you wait?
Most applications process within 48 hours. The Salama AI system handles the bulk of the work now. But sometimes human eyes need to look at things, and that can take a bit longer.
If you’ve applied for a tourist e-visa and are waiting to hear back, our e-visa guide explains processing times and what to do if there’s a delay.
What You'll Need to Check
Before you start, dig up:
- Your request number, application number, or transaction number (on the receipt from the typing center)
- Your passport details.
- The emirate where you applied.
If you can’t find the number, call the typing center or your sponsor. They have it.
Where to Look
Applied in | Go here |
Dubai | GDRFA website or app |
Abu Dhabi | |
Sharjah | ICP portal |
Any other emirate | ICP portal |
Method 1: The Federal ICP Portal (All Emirates except Dubai)
If your visa came from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah, you need the ICP Smart Services portal.
- Where to go: ICP Application Tracking Page
- What you require: Request number and your email.
Method 2: The GDRFA Dubai Portal (Dubai Only)
If a company or person in Dubai sponsored your visa, then GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) handles your visa.
- Where to go: GDRFA Dubai Status Inquiry
- What you require: Order Number, Transaction Number, and Application Date.
How to Check (Step by Step)
If you applied through ICP (everywhere except Dubai):
- Step 1: Go to the ICP Smart Services website
- Step 2: Look for "Application Tracking" under public services. It's usually right there after the option of File Validity
- Step 3: Type in your request number and email carefully. One wrong digit changes everything
- Step 4: Clear the CAPTCHA and wait
If you applied in Dubai through GDRFA:
- Step 1: Visit the GDRFA Dubai website
- Step 2: Go to the Visa Status option. It is on the homepage
- Step 3: Enter your transaction number and order number
- Step 4: Click search
What the Results Actually Mean
This status | Means this |
Received | They have your paperwork. It’s in the queue. |
Under Process | Someone is looking at it. Most clear within 48 hours. |
Approved | Good news! Your visa is ready. |
Rejected | Something went wrong. Call your sponsor. |
Pending Action | They need something from you. Check your email. |
When It's Been a Week, and Nothing Changed
- Step 1: Check your spam folder. Seriously. Sometimes requests for more documents end up there
- Step 2: Call your sponsor or the typing center. They might have gotten a notification you missed
- Step 3: Contact the help desk
- For ICP: 600 522 222.
- For GDRFA: 800 5111.
If you’re still waiting to even start the process, our guide to getting a work visa in the UAE explains how your employer initiates everything and what you need to provide.”
- Step 4: If all else fails, visit a center. Amer in Dubai. ICP Happiness Center elsewhere
A thought to hold onto: Most delays are simple. A signature that doesn’t match. A document that needs resubmitting. Nothing that can’t be sorted out.
Checking UAE Visa Renewal Status
If you’re a resident, renewal time rolls around every two or three years. The process is usually smooth, but checking never hurts.
For a complete guide on how renewals work, what documents you need, and what happens after approval, check out our detailed residence visa renewal guide.
What You'll Need
- Your file number (from your existing visa or Emirates ID)
- Or your passport number
- The emirate where you live
How to Check
- Step 1: Go to the right portal. GDRFA for Dubai. ICP for everywhere else
- Step 2: Choose "File Validity" on ICP under the public service option or "Visa status" on GDRFA site
- Step 3: Enter your passport details on ICP and transaction and order number on GDRFA
- Step 3: Enter your passport details on ICP and transaction and order number on GDRFA
- Step 4: Look at the status
If you see | That means… |
Under Process | Your renewal is being reviewed. |
Approved | Your new visa is ready. Next step: update Emirates ID. |
Action Required | Someone needs something. Check with your sponsor. |
What Happens After Approval
Once your renewal shows approved:
- Your old visa is automatically cancelled. The new one takes over.
- You’ll get a notification about updating your Emirates ID.
- The digital version in the UAEICP app works while you wait for the physical card.
One less thing to worry about: You don’t need to do anything else. The system handles the switch.
What Is Visa Cancellation in the UAE?
.Visa cancellation is when your residency visa gets officially ended. Your sponsor, whether an employer, family member, or company, initiates it with immigration authorities. Once it’s canceled, your legal right to stay under that visa stops.
This applies to:
- Employment visas.
- Family sponsorship visas.
- Investor visas.
- Domestic worker visas.
- Any residence permit.
Why Checking Cancellation Status in UAE Matters?
This might be the most important check you ever do. When you leave a job, your sponsor should cancel your visa. But here’s the thing: people learn the hard way. You can’t just take their word for it. You need to see it in the system.
Why it matters:
An uncancelled visa can mean the following:
- You can’t get a new job.
- You might get fines if you overstay without knowing.
- You could be marked as absconding.
- Your Emirates ID might get blocked.
How to Check UAE Visa Cancellation Status with Passport Number
This works from anywhere. Inside the UAE. Outside the UAE. On your phone. On your laptop.
- Step 1: Go to the right portal
- For Dubai visas: GDRFA.
- .For all other emirates: ICP
- Step 2: Find the passport search option
- On ICP, choose the File validity option. Select the “Passport Information” along with “Residency or Visa” option.
- On the GDRFA app: “On the home screen, tap the Services option shown with a grid/menu icon. After clicking the service option, scroll down to the Entry Permit Services section. Inside that section, you will see File Status Inquiry. Tap File Status Inquiry. Then select passport information and your visa type.
- Step 3: Enter your details
- Passport number (exactly as written).
- Passport expiry date.
- Nationality.
- Step 4: Click search and wait
What You're Looking For
Result | What It Tells You |
Cancelled / Closed | You’re free. The visa is gone from the system. |
Active / Valid | Still active. Cancellation hasn’t happened yet. |
Expired | The visa reached its end date, but formal cancellation may still be needed. |
No Record Found | Could mean cancelled and removed. Could mean never existed. Check with the sponsor. |
How to Check with a File Number
If you have your old file number, you can use that too.
- Step 1: Go to the ICP smart services portal
- Step 2: Select the "File" option under "File validity" on the public service page
- Select it along with the option of visa; you can also select the residency option instead of visa if you are a resident.
- A section appears underneath with the file number option again. Select it.
- Step 3: Enter your file number
- Step 4: View the status
What If It Still Shows Active After a Week?
- Step 1: Contact your former employer. They may not have processed it yet.
- Step 2: Contact the typing center that did your visa. They can check.
- Step 3: If you're in the UAE, visit an Amer Center (Dubai) or an ICP Happiness Center (other emirates). Bring your passport and any documents you have.
Something to remember: You have a 30-day grace period after cancellation to either leave or get a new visa. The clock starts the day the visa is actually cancelled, not the day you left your job.
Common Mistakes People Make During Visa Cancellation
Mistake | Why It Hurts |
Assuming your employer canceled it | They say they will. Doesn’t mean they did. Check yourself. |
Never checking after you leave | The system doesn’t send reminders. You have to look. |
Thinking expired = canceled | Not the same. An expired visa may still be active in the system. |
Missing grace period deadlines | One day late = AED 50 fine. Adds up fast. |
Using random websites | Third-party sites overcharge or steal your data. Stick to official portals. |
These mistakes cost people time, money, and stress. Avoid them.
Visa Expiry vs Visa Cancellation
People mix these up all the time. Here’s the difference.
Visa Expiry | Visa Cancellation | |
What happens | The visa reaches its end date naturally | Your sponsor officially ends it |
Who does it | No one—it just runs out | Your employer or family sponsor |
What comes next | May still need formal cancellation | Grace period starts immediately |
Can you get a new visa? | Not until it’s canceled | Yes, once status shows “Canceled” |
They’re separate processes. An expired visa is not automatically canceled.
Can You Apply for a New Visa After Cancellation?
Yes. Once your status shows “canceled” in the system, you’re free to:
- Apply for a new job and employment visa.
- Switch to a family sponsorship visa.
- Get a visit or tourist visa.
- Leave and come back on a new visa.
Just make sure cancellation is fully completed first. “Almost done” doesn’t count.
How Long Does Visa Cancellation Take?
Situation | Time |
Normal individual cases | 1–3 working days |
Company group cancellations | Up to 5 days |
Special or complex cases | Up to 7 days |
You can track progress online. Don’t guess. Check.
Do You Have to Leave Immediately After Cancellation?
No. You get a grace period. In it you can do:
- Stay in the UAE (legally)
- Apply to change your visa status
- Find a new sponsor
- Exit before the grace period ends.
Tips to Avoid Visa Cancellation Problems
- Check your status yourself. Don’t rely on others.
- Take a screenshot of the confirmation page.
- Know your grace period end date. Mark it on a calendar.
- Keep copies of your passport and Emirates ID.
- Use only official government websites.

Step 1: Use the ICP or GDRFA portal.
Step 2: You can track it by file number method number.
Step 3: Check the status. “Under Process” means waiting. “Approved” means done.
A 2026 Rule You Should Know
Tourist visas now have zero grace period. The day your visa expires, fines start. AED 50 per day. No warning. No extra days.Apply for extensions at least one week before your current visa expires. The system needs time to process.

This is the one people are most afraid to check. But here’s the truth: not knowing is worse. If there’s a ban, you want to know about it from your couch, not at the airport counter.

For Dubai visas, the system may show banned information under your file while checking your visa status.
What If You Find a Ban?
Don’t panic. Most bans have clear resolution paths.
Ban type | How to fix it |
Immigration ban | Usually expires after a set time (6 months to a year). May need sponsor approval. |
Labor ban | Can be lifted with a new job offer and MOHRE approval. |
Financial ban | Pay what you owe. Get a clearance certificate. |
Legal ban | Resolve the court case. Get legal advice. |
Where to Go for Help
- Dubai: GDRFA Al Jaffliya for immigration bans. Dubai Police for financial bans.
- Other emirates: ICP Happiness Centers for immigration. Local police are for financial.
- MOHRE: For labor bans related to employment.
A comforting truth: Most bans are temporary. They have end dates. They have resolution paths. The key is knowing about them early so you can take action.
What Different Status Messages Mean
Sometimes the confusion isn’t about finding your status. It’s about understanding what the status actually means.
For Active Visas
Message | Meaning |
Valid / Active | You’re good. Visa is working. |
Expired | The visa reached its end date. If you’re still here, you need to leave or extend. |

Under Process | Someone is reviewing it. |

Rejected | Didn’t go through. Contact sponsor. |
Pending Action | They need something. Check your email. |
For Cancellations

Cancelled | Done. You’re out of the system. |
Closed | Same as cancelled. File is closed. |
Transferred | Visa moved to a new sponsor. |
For Bans
Message | Meaning |

Case Registered | There’s a legal or financial case. |
Absconding | Marked as having left a job without notice. Needs resolution. |
Grace Periods and Fines (2026 Rules)
The rules changed. Here’s what you need to know.
For Residents After Cancellation
Situation | Days you get |
You resigned | 30 days |
Your contract ended | 30 days |
You were terminated | 30 days |
Your sponsor cancelled you | 30 days |
In those 30 days, you can:
- Leave without paying fines.
- Find a new job and get a new visa.
- Switch to a tourist visa.
If your visa is cancelled, your family’s visas are cancelled too. Learn about the family residence visa process to understand how to keep everyone covered.”
For Tourists
Visa type | Grace period |
30-day tourist visa | None. Fines start immediately. |
60-day tourist visa | None. Fines start immediately. |
90-day mission visa | None. Fines start immediately. |
This is new for 2026. No more extra days. The day your visa expires, the meter starts running.
Overstay Fines
The amount: AED 50 per day.
No cap. It keeps adding up until you leave or fix your status.
How to check if you owe:
- ICP portal: Your status will show outstanding fines.
- GDRFA portal: Check under “File Validity.”
- UAEICP app: Fines appear on your profile.
How to pay:
- Online through the same portals.
- At smart kiosks in malls.
- At Amer Centers or ICP Happiness Centers.
Something to remember: Fines feel scary, but they’re just numbers. Thousands of people have paid them and moved on. The system lets you pay and start fresh.
When the System Itself Is the Problem
Sometimes your visa is fine, but the system shows something wrong. Here’s what that looks like and how to fix it.
The UID Merge Problem
Sometimes you end up with two UID numbers in the system. This happens when:
- You renew your passport.
- You had a visit visa before getting residency.
- Someone made a typo when entering your data.
Signs you have this problem:
- “No Record Found” when you know your visa exists.
- Different results with different search methods.
- Your Emirates ID doesn’t match your visa record.
The fix: You have to visit in person.
- Dubai visas: GDRFA Al Jaffliya.
- Other emirates: ICP Customer Happiness Center.
Bring both your old and new passports. An officer will merge your records. Takes about 20 minutes. After that, everything works.
Biometric Sync Delays
You gave fingerprints and eye scans. The system says “Pending Biometrics” anyway.
What to do:
- Wait 48 hours. Most sync within two days.
- If still pending after 72 hours, check for an SMS from ICP.
- If they ask you to re-scan, go back to the center.
Questions People Ask When They're Worried
